Discussion about The Wibbley Brothers - Go Weird
Altad
Well, where does one start with this pickled jar of oddities? I think it’d be fair for Collins Dictionary to allow the Go Weird sleeve to sit alongside the definition for uncategorized. Quite apt may I say that the album was recorded at Spaceward studios, as the result was a venture in to the abyss. On account of the end product you can tell the recording sesh for this would have a been a jam of gargantuan proportions, with plenty of fun. The humorous theme throughout puts me in mind of Monty Python, or literary icons such as Robert Rankin or Douglas Adams: Punk, punchy and wacky. This was a huge draw for me.It’s difficult to truly understand where the basis of The Wibbley Brothers’ track’s come from, but what I can say is that the album is a raid on the senses and an insight into some magnificent minds. We’re treated to folk, punk, wave, experimentation and good natured silliness. Odd food referencing, tree-climbing-inept spiders and Morris Dancing musings make for a hot bed of WEIRD.The most interesting track for me is The Wonderful World of Terry Wibbley. I believe this is one the first outings of the TR-303, rubbing shoulders with the TR-606; made famous quite a few years later when young Chicagoans started experimenting with machines in what would soon be called house. After listening to this there is one question that still keeps me awake at night – Who invented the umbrella?
