Discussion about VX aka Virgil Enzinger & Xavier Morel - Fiction
Tebei
While this double compact disc release isn't all that, erm, original or graced with unprecedented musical qualities and surprise twists, VX's "Fiction" is rocking dance floors on a global scale, and doesn't even hint at doing anything but. You may not be aware of it, but these lengthy, bass heavy, rolling techno pieces are incorporated in more modern sets than you could have imagined. Focus is more on the laptop DJ I guess, since the vinyl version(s) lack some of the better stuff here, where the CD/digital release has a full dozen of club efficient cuts (Pole Shift excluded, as it's an ambient cut). Basically, this is an album which more than skilfully meets modern techno scene demands, and lands as quite a handy tool to those in need of something to play during the darker, later hours of the night. If you've been feeling the more recent stuff such as the Collabs "Magnit EP", Speedy J's Armostrong tune, Brian Sanhaji's album on CLR, or the joint Mark Broom & James Ruskin "No Time Soon" or Planetary Assault Systems' last year's "Temporary Suspension" full length, then don't miss out on this one. Persistently morbid, with dark and overwhelming metallic sounds, buffeting bass lines and linear, uplifting sequences which will convince even the laziest of all crowds to dispatch their bones off to the floor. As a whole, it can get a little tiresome. Too many tracks which go on for far too long, and not nearly enough intrigue to validate thirteen tracks, or put in a context of time, two hours and eight minutes. However, hoping that the respective producers had the clubs in mind in the first place, this is regardless a compulsory tool. If you've been liking the recent european take on techno music, you ought to get a kick out of this as well. Rightfully used and placed in a broader musical spectrum, this pumping material ought to get plenty fists high up in the air, when these deep bass lines get properly mixed in with some equally devastating stuff. Despite its overall formulaic and predictable sound, where the idea of the music is determined solely by its utility in providing happiness or pleasure on the dance floor, "Fiction" does that quite successfully, I must admit. Two hours of this stuff is more that I'd ever want to get in my living room, but trust me: you could probably come up with a solid 50% of a gig just by using tracks from this double pack. My favorite tracks are the opener, Sahara, with a fabulously dark and mysterious beatless intro, with an awesome, pummeling drum kick entering some four minutes deep - this track does wonders in clubs and a large sound system, and it's such a shame it hasn't been released on vinyl; closely on its heels is the metallic and driving Barbaric, which reminds me of the beloved title track from P.A.S. album from last year! For those who like it slightly darker, on a monotonous tip, and especially for DJs who like it compressed, linear and keep a constant head nodding/feet tapping atmosphere - look no further. A little more variety would have been nice, as both of these producers have been involved in some awesome projects before, but truth be said, they just don't have what it takes to deliver two hours of thoroughly solid music. Kudos for the effort, but there is a very narrow and limited amount of sounds and ideas displayed on "Fiction", so at times it will sound boring, but please do keep in mind that the true value and power of this release will be unveiled in clubs, not bed rooms!
